PRYME Youth Media
PRYME is a combination of innovative programs that recruits and trains area youth to effectively use:
* radio and television production
* creative writing and print publication
* web page design and management
* national youth production through the Listen Up! Youth Production Network - PRYME is it's only Ohio Affiliate!
* their voices through a variety of media against violence as part of Cleveland Youth SHOUT OUT Against Violence
Through a series of bureaus or sites spread out throughout the metropolitan Cleveland area, PRYME offers youth a variety of opportunities:
Opportunity #1 - Youth Radio and Video Production
PRYME recruits middle and high school student producers who create weekly radio programs or features. These are aired on WJCU (John Carroll Radio) 88.7 Tuesday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. as part of its OUR WORLD series. The show has a consistent listening audience of 10,000. Recent programs have explored such topics as Homeless Women and Children, Youth Depression and Suicide, Youth Violence, Teen Court, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Teen Parenting, Multi-cultural Education, The Underground Railroad, AIDS, Free Speech and the Internet and much more. This group of students also produces videos including a recent television special entitled YOUTH POWER for the WVIZ which was nominated for an EMMY.
Opportunity #2 - Youth Creative Writing and Publication
Some of the PRYME bureaus in the neighborhoods recruit middle school and high school students to do creative written and spoken word in poetry and story. Like the groups doing radio and video, these groups meet weekly for 8 weeks at a time to listen to guest speakers and take field trips. The youth then write about their experiences. They select some of their materials to print in a regional newsletter for youth throughout the metropolitan Cleveland area. PRYME Youth Radio producers help the younger teens turn their print material into radio scripts.
Opportunity #3 - The Listen Up! Youth Media Network
In January of 2002 PRYME Youth Media began a new phase of its history. It joined the LISTEN UP! National Youth Media Network.
Listen Up! engages youth from diverse backgrounds in the researching, writing, production, editing and distribution of their own media. By creating these messages, Listen Up! producers are learning important life and communication skills. They are portraying themselves and their peers in a positive light, on their own terms, and in their own voices. Working together as a national network, Listen Up! creates a strong sense of solidarity among its producers. It lets them know that their works, and their voices, are important and valued. Listen Up! is a project of Learning Matters, Inc., which produces The Merrow Report, PBS and NPR's premier documentary series on youth, and learning through Listen Up! PRYME YOUTH producers have the opportunity to share their work both locally and nationally. Initially all participants in this program are introduced to Public Service Announcement production and placement.
Opportunity #4 - Cleveland Youth SHOUT OUT Against Violence
Efforts to prevent gun violence in Northeast Ohio are at a critical juncture. Homicides involving children have doubled. Gun violence is not a given; it does not need to be accepted as beyond our control to change. In response to this epidemic, InterAct Cleveland and PRYME, together with their partners, member congregations and collaborators, have started an initiative to prevent gun violence and encourage youth and others to make healthy non-violent choices.
Cleveland's Youth SHOUT OUT Against Violence Initiative will raise concerned youth voices through radio broadcasts, video cable casts, radio and television public service announcements, billboards, posters, T-shirts, youth and adult led community dialogues and an interactive web site. Also included will be well promoted public events that would include youth produced video, plays, radio dramas, poetry readings, music, story-telling and first person testimonials by victims of gun violence and others.
Raise the Cleveland community's awareness to the problem of gun violence......
Raise your voice.
